Two employees killed in incident at Harmony's Mponeng mine

Harmony Gold Mining Company has confirmed the death of two employees in a shaft engineering-related incident at the Mponeng mine, near Carletonville, in Gauteng.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the families, friends and colleagues of our employees during this very difficult time.

"The safety and wellbeing of our people remain our highest priority, and we are committed to fully understanding the circumstances of this incident, learning from it and doing everything possible to prevent a recurrence," CEO Beyers Nel says.

The gold miner reports that an investigation into the incident is under way and being led by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.
